Going biking in the Rocky Mountains? You’ll want a mountain bike. These bikes are built to take a beating on dirt trails or other off-road environments…or around potholes, curbs, or construction sites.

Advantages

• Durable. A mountain bike is extremely durable. The seating and handlebar position make it easy to see in city traffic and to stop and start frequently. The fat, knobby tires and suspensions allow you to handle almost any road condition.

Reality Check

• Slow. A mountain bike’s wide, knobby tires and sturdy frame will slow you down. They’re less than ideal for traveling more than a few miles on flat surfaces.

Quick Facts

• The mountain bike has its origins in the modified heavy cruiser bicycles used for freewheeling down mountain trials in California in the mid-late 1970s.
