Safe Routes to School

The Federal Safe Routes to School (SRTS) Program empowers communities to make walking and bicycling to school a safe and routine activity once again. The Program makes funding available for a wide variety of programs and projects, from building safer street crossings to establishing programs that encourage children and their parents to walk and bicycle safely to school.

Transmittal of Guidance on Bicycle and Pedestrian Provisions of the Federal-Aid Program

This memorandum transmits the Federal Highway Administration's (FHWA) Guidance on the Bicycle and Pedestrian Provisions of the Federal-aid Program and reaffirms the agency's strong commitment to improving conditions for bicycling and walking. They expect every transportation agency to make accommodation for bicycling and walking a routine part of their planning, design, construction, operations and maintenance activities.

Accommodating Bicycle and Pedestrian Travel: A Recommended Approach is a policy statement adopted by the United States Department of Transportation. USDOT hopes that public agencies, professional associations, advocacy groups, and others adopt this approach as a way of committing themselves to integrating bicycling and walking into the transportation mainstream.

Bicycle and Pedestrian Design Guidance Language

Federal Design Guidance Language, entitled "Accommodating Bicycle and Pedestrian Travel; A Recommended Approach - A US DOT Policy Statement on Integrating Bicycling and Walking into Transportation Infrastructure," states that bicycling and walking facilities will be incorporated into all transportation projects unless "exceptional circumstances" exist.

Federal Highway Administration: Safe Routes to School

The Safe Routes to Schools Program is a Federal-Aid program of the U.S. Department of Transportation's Federal Highway Administration (FHWA). The SRTS Program is funded at $612 million over five Federal fiscal years (FY 2005-2009) and is to be administered by State Departments of Transportation (DOTs). The Program provides funds to the States to substantially improve the ability of primary and middle school students to walk and bicycle to school safely.
