Bike Walk Ambassadors Update—A Record Women’s Wednesday

Bike Walk Week 2012 was a week full of great bicycling and walking activities. Truly, there was something for everyone! As part of the week, the Bike Walk Ambassadors hosted the fourth annual Women's Wednesday Bicycling Series.

The Women's Wednesday series consists of a bicycling clinic and workshop held the Wednesday before Bike Walk Week and a Minneapolis Women's Ride the Wednesday during Bike Walk Week. Women's Wednesday serves as a short series for everyone from beginners to experienced riders to brush up on their bicycling know-how and gain more confidence bicycling with traffic in urban areas.

A great group of cyclists turned out for the 2012 Women's Wednesday series.

More than 20 women participated in the 2012 Women's Wednesday series.  Our clinic and workshop attendees were enthusiastic and we had even more women register for the group ride.  In fact, we had more women participate in the group ride this year than in previous years! The goal of this ride was to highlight connections to downtown Minneapolis and some of the more recently completed bikeways. We rode along on-street and off-street bikeways in and around downtown and just across the river into Northeast Minneapolis.

Focused on increasing confidence and safety when riding in traffic, the Bike Walk Ambassadors brought riders through downtown Minneapolis on Women's Wednesday

The weather started out beautifully as we took off from the downtown YWCA. We rolled down Nicollet Mall to the tucked-away Loring Greenway, into Loring Park and onto the new bike lanes on 14th/15th/16th Streets (behind the Convention Center), then north on 11th Avenue. We wound our way up onto the 10th Avenue Bridge and crossed the Mississippi over to the University of Minnesota area.  From this point we caught the 5th Street Bicycle Boulevard into Northeast Minneapolis.

Leaving Northeast Minneapolis we pedaled down Marshall Street, then Main Street, and took a short break just before crossing the Mississippi River to let a few pouring rain clouds pass. When the rain let up to a sprinkle we were on our way for the last stretch of our ride: over the river on the scenic Stone Arch Bridge, up West River Parkway, and back into downtown Minneapolis along the Cedar Lake Trail.

Fun fact: The Twin Cities has one of the nation's highest rates of women bicyclists!

The Bike Walk Ambassadors look forward to leading Women's Wednesday each year, and hope that any women interested in a fun, social outing with the added benefit of cycling confidence will join us for next year's edition!

No bicycle? No problem! We are always happy to provide a Nice Ride bicycle at no cost for those in need of wheels for Women's Wednesday or any other rides hosted by the Bike Walk Ambassadors.
