Bike Fest

Thursday, May 26, 2011, the Bike Walk Ambassadors participated in the first Bike Fest event of the season at Harrison Park in North Minneapolis. The weather was perfect and the Bike Walk Ambassadors worked with more than 100 youth, providing instruction and experiential demonstrations to promote safer bicycling.

The Bike Walk Ambassadors guided youth through a brain injury simulation activity, followed by a ride through a bicycle safety course. The brain injury simulation activity demonstrates how important it is for youth to wear helmets while bicycling to create a safer bicycling experience. The bicycle safety course teaches youth several skills, including how to scan for traffic while riding, signal and execute turns, perform obstacle avoidance maneuvers, and practice basic bicycle handling skills.

Bike Fest is a local partnership of Minneapolis Parks & Recreation, The Hub Bicycle Co-op, American Academy of Neurology, and many other organizations that support youth focused activities and safety. Other Bike Fest activities for youth included: helmet fitting, repairing a flat tire, riding an old-fashioned high wheel, bicycle tune ups, and bike-giveaways from Redeemer Center for Life.

Bike Fest is an ongoing event that will take place at a different North Minneapolis Park every Thursday from 4-7 pm in June. The Bike Walk Ambassadors will be attending as many of these Bike Fest events as they can and hope to see you there!
