October 2011 Bike Walk Week: Thanks for making it a success!

From Alicia Adams, BWTC

Thank you to everyone who participated in Ocotber's Bike Walk Week! This October we focused on encouraging people to continue bicycling and walking as the temperature drops (and yes, it will eventually drop!) and the days get shorter.

International Walk and Bike to School Day was a main event and was a huge success. Over 40 schools participated in events that encouraged and celebrated students and parents for walking or bicycling to school.  Donations from AAA, QBP, Clif Bar & Co., and Nick Universe helped reward students for being a part of active transportation!

We also focused on winter cycling safety with classes in Minneapolis, Saint Paul, and Edina.

As participants know, Bike Walk Week is a celebration of active transportation --and this year there was a lot to celebrate! There were events for the grand openings of bike lanes in downtown Minneapolis, Northeast Minneapolis, South Minneapolis, and North Minneapolis. We also celebrated Nice Ride MN's arrival in Saint Paul. Part of that celebration included a group ride led by Council Members Carter and Stark as a tour of the new Nice Ride stations.

By the end of the week, nearly 200 people took the pledge to continue walking and bicycling at least once a week for the rest of the year. Check back at bikewalkweek.org and bikewalkmove.org as we share some of their winter walking and bicycling stories.

If you have a winter walking or cycling story that you don't mind sharing, send it to us and we may share it on our Bike Walk MOVE website!
