Kingfield Farmers Market: Where Bikers (and walkers!) Rule

From Amber Collett, Communications Associate

On Sunday, August 28, Bike Walk Move partnered with the Kingfield Farmers Market, the Bike Walk Ambassadors, and HourCar to highlight sustainable transportation options in the neighborhood. There were informational tables, free bike tune-ups, and Bike Walk Move gave away a Burley Travoy trailer!

Throughout the day, HourCar's Chris Bineham talked with market shoppers about the car-share program and even had a car at the market for folks to take a look at. For each car a family can do without, they can save more than $8,000 a year -imagine how many fresh market veggies you could buy with that extra cash!

The Bike Walk Ambassadors and volunteer mechanic, Alex Kraker, offered free bike tune-ups to anyone who biked to the market. There were even 'bike valets' to usher bikes from the front of the market to the mechanic's tent in the far back corner and help people find their bikes when they were ready to leave the market. Over the course of the day, Alex fixed small problems on more than 50 bikes.

Bike Walk Move volunteers staffed a table near the Kingfield Neighborhood Association and gave out 'I Walked' and 'I Biked' stickers, bicycle maps, reflective arm and leg bands, and bright blue Bike Walk Move t-shirts. We also had free crunchy Cliff bars for the early morning shoppers! The table was made even more popular by the give-away: a Burley Travoy Trailer! The winner, Katie Albright, seemed very excited by the news!

Over the course of the market, it became clear that Kingfield shoppers love supporting not only sustainable food but also sustainable ways of moving. Folks shared stories of their recent rides along the Riverlake Greenway, excitement over the bike lanes appearing on 1st and Blaisedell, and how new infrastructure projects are re-shaping their commutes and recreational trips. We look forward to visiting the market again!
