The Bike Walk Twin Cities initiative provides funding to innovative bicycling and walking projects located in Minneapolis and its neighboring communities.

The board of directors at Transit for Livable Communities is the decision-making entity for the initiative. Working closely with agency partners and an advisory committee, the board determines which projects receive funding.

 

Demonstration Innovations

Demonstration innovation projects are state of the art bike and walk facilities and programs.

Infrastructure

Infrastructure projects build new on-road bike and walk facilities.

Planning

Planning projects help communities address places that are difficult for walking or bicycling. Recommendations that result from these studies may be implemented in later funding rounds.

Operations

Operations projects make the existing transportation environment safer and more convenient for bicycling and walking.

Livable Streets

Livable streets modify existing streets and sidewalks, making them more inviting and safer for pedestrians and bicyclists.

Bike Walk Streets

These streets provide a quiet, safe, and attractive route for bicyclists and walkers – especially those bicyclists and walkers who do not feel comfortable traveling on high traffic streets.

Off-Road Trails

Off-road projects create new paths or greenways, provide access around barriers (like railroad crossings, rivers, or roads), or fill gaps in existing bicycling or walking networks.

Education and Outreach

Bike Walk Twin Cities has funded several workshops and educational programs in the Twin Cities.

Bike Walk Streets

These streets provide a quiet, safe, and attractive route for bicyclists and walkers – especially those bicyclists and walkers who do not feel comfortable traveling on high traffic streets.
