This project involves the construction of a sidewalk on the east side of Douglas Drive in Golden Valley where none exists and a 4-3 lane conversion to allow for 5’ to 6’ wide bike lanes in each direction.

The sidewalk will be slightly more than a half mile in length (from the future Luce Line Trail south of Golden Valley Road to Duluth Street), and will include and ADA compliant rail road crossing and other ADA enhancements to meet PROWAAC standards.

The “Road Diet” will extend from Golden Valley Road to Medicine Lake Road, approximately one mile in length. By going from four lanes to three (the middle lane will become a two way left turning lane), there will be room for marked bike lanes. The bike lanes will also provide a buffer zone for sidewalk users.

Additionally, Golden Valley will work with Hennepin County (the managing authority) to decrease the posted speed limit from 40 mph to 30 mph; the award is dependent on the posted speed limit being lowered to at least 35 mph.

Cost of the project is expected to be about $1.4 million, of which, the TLC Board has awarded $1.05 million.
